Coach Frank Martin has this team playing at an extremely high level. I can sense an excitement around this team. It was exciting to see Michael Beasley and Bill Walker come through here and grace us with their presence, but honestly I haven't felt this excited since the late 80's early 90's. Beasley and Walker were great, don't get me wrong, but I always had this feeling like we were on borrowed time. Everybody and their dog knew those two weren't staying past their "freshman" season. Maybe it was just me, but I never felt great about that team. They had some amazing moments, beating KU for one, but to me it felt like they didn't live up to expectations.
This year just feels different. In recent years, with games against Dayton, Wazzu, Xavier or UNLV I didn't expect a win....a close game would be nice, but I just wanted to be competitive. We're winning these games, and convincingly. Upcoming is Alabama....to me this game seems scary. Alabama on their home floor gave Purdue all they could handle. I'm afraid that if the Cats don't bring their A-Game, they'll be flying back home with a black eye. We finally are in the top 25, and we need to bolster our position. These games are the games that get you into the tourney. K-State has twice in the last two years finished 4th in the Big 12, and each year our entry into the tournament was in question. I feel Beasley's star power was the single reason we made it two years ago and last year we just didn't have that sexy appeal. We lacked key non-con wins. This year we have em. Two wins over top 25 teams and quality victories over BCS opponents along with a victory over Xavier that just beat a ranked Cincinnati Bearcat team.
It's still early, I realize that, but one can't get pumped up thinking of what could happen with this team. I still feel we haven't played our best basketball yet. Granted we could falter in the Big 12 and all these non-con wins could be for naught, but I just don't think that's gonna happen. These Cats can keep winning. They can earn a spot to the Dance. They can begin to restore some of the greatness the K-State teams of ancient year had. They can also fall flat on their face. Coach Martin has this team heading in the right direction with his recruiting, and has proven a lot of people wrong when they said he couldn't coach. Frank knows what he's doing and I hope these kids are giving him their all.
Let's go Roll the Tide. Go Cats!!
